A stela (or stele) is a stone or wooden slab, generally taller than it is wide, erected as a monument, very often at a tomb or burial site. Based on a fragment of a marble relief, this piece in fact depicts a warrior at such a place of burial. He stands by a pillar with a downturned spear and a serpent at his feet, symbolizing the soul of the deceased. |
